Back from my holidays

I have been off for two weeks having a holiday and trying to get some much needed work done to our bathroom. Had a lovely trip to the Lake District and not such a good time at 30 degrees trying to get the tiles to stick nice and level.

Here at Wicken we are getting the cutting rotation underway on the Sedge Fen and I am working to plan a budget for fence construction on Burwell Fen. I had a nice morning driving out on Burwell Fen this morning getting the lie of the land rather than trying to remember and looking at maps.

If anyone is on Twitter I have decided to give it a go. Not planning on posting loads of things on there but I might pop on some things about birds spotted out and about, where I am mowing if you want to avoid me and my noisy tractor, if the Lodes Way is being blocked or something along those lines... Also I do tend to spend a fair bit of time working by myself so it would be nice to say what I'm up to and have a bit of company :-) I managed to get my mobile set up to send pictures so might pop some up of what is going on from time to time too.

I am @Vision_Warden

PS: Jason working hard today getting the bales moved. Frustrating work.

Cutting and Baling

Today we have been cutting and baling some of our areas with thistles and ragwort present. It is done in one fast process with no drying as it will be taken to compost down. The ragwort and other weeds present in the bales mean they can’t be used for feed and so on like a normal hay bail. Also the rain is not so much of an issue for us for the same reason. They are only small but pretty heavy. We chose to cut it now as the weeds have begun to show signs of seeding and we clearly don’t want that to happen as it will increase their populations in future years.

Here are a few pictures of the chaps from Hygiene Pigs Ltd who are doing the work for us. Hopefully they will be able to finish tomorrow.

Also here is a link to a panoramic from Oily Hall the other day:
